51°µÍø's Rocket League team completed a stand-out season, capping off an undefeated regular season with a championship victory in the Great Lakes Esports Conference (GLEC) playoffs this past weekend.
The Bears, entering as the top seed, demonstrated their skill and teamwork throughout the postseason, establishing themselves among the elite collegiate Rocket League programs in the nation. Led by standout performers Blade Taylor, known by his gamer tag "SlaYeR", Sean Downard "Tacostash84", Dyllan DeBruyne "Duckworth", and reserve player Tanis Caltrider "Spookii", the team's perfect record reflects their dedication and talent.
With this victory, the team has secured qualification for two national-level competitions. The Bears will compete in the NACE Starleague Nationals in Florida on Apr. 23-27, where they have already reached the Top 8, as well as the Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup (CECC) taking place May 2-4, at Esports Stadium Arlington in Texas. Adding to the team's accolades, Downard received individual recognition, being named to the All-Conference First Team and earning the title of GLEC League MVP for his exceptional performance throughout the season.
"This Rocket League team has overcome every obstacle thrown their way this year," said Justin Kogge, SSU Interim Esports Director. "Through extreme adversity, they've remained focused, professional, and united. What's impressed me most is their championship-ready communication and mature, team-first demeanor. I can confidently say this is one of the most prepared and driven rosters I've ever worked with. I truly believe they have what it takes to bring a national championship back to Shawnee State – and we're going to spend the next month doing everything we can to help make that happen."
The Esports program’s success extended beyond just the Rocket League roster, as SSU Overwatch team outperformed their original seed to finish 7th out of 24 teams, ending their season with a victory over Albion College. Additionally, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team placed 9th out of 24 colleges in the tournament.
