An accelerated pathway to classroom teaching

Shawnee State School of Education hosts an approved university program for completion of both phases of the Alternative Licensure Program: the Alternative Resident Educator Institute (AREI) and the Professional Development Institute (PDI)

The Alternative Resident Educator license is an accelerated pathway to classroom teaching. This pathway allows students, schools, and communities to benefit from the candidates' content-related knowledge, life experience, and successful career experience. Ohio students can benefit from the rich knowledge base and successful career and life experiences of content experts in a variety of teaching fields. As Ohio focuses on assuring a high-quality teacher in every classroom, a wide range of professionals must be invited to bring their talents and expertise into our schools. (Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, 2024).

Program Highlights

  • Online courses are presented asynchronously to fit the schedule of working professionals.
  • If both the AREI and PDI portions of the Alternative Licensure program are completed at Shawnee, only 12 additional hours of coursework are needed to earn a Master’s of Education degree.
  • Specific content or reading courses that would be the best option to fulfill your program requirements depend on your previous coursework and your planned timeline to complete the Alternative Licensure Program. The Director of Graduate Programs will help you plan your course schedule.

Each candidate’s course schedule will vary based on their chosen course pathway, semester of entry, and preferred course load. The School of Education Graduate Program Director will collaborate with each student to design an individualized plan that fulfills state content requirements and aligns with the student's personal and professional goals.
